On Saturday 28 July, the annual Veggie Tournament was contested at St Heliers Bowling Club. Perhaps the highlight of the Eastern Zone Winter Coaching programme, 40 VegHeads across all levels completed a full day’s competition. The Club coaches organise this fun tournament to get the students geared up for the Auckland Canoe & Campi winter tournaments organised by Auckland Bowls Coaching Association.
Barclay Lee said he wants the bowlers to experience a full day’s play against a variety of levels, and then be able to come back to coaching the next two weeks before Canoe and Campi knowing what they need to practice. (Annual Canoe & Campi Tournaments will be held on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August. The Canoe will be played at Bridge Park Bowling Club and the Campi will be played at Epsom Bowling Club.)
Thanks to cheerful and efficient hospitality volunteers Ken Batkin, Bud Little and Bruce Crosbie on the barbecue, a tasty morning tea and afternoon nosh accompanied the prize giving. Catherine, Esther and Barclay presented fun awards and named the top teams of the day. Each participant “shopped” at overflowing arrangements of produce and groceries and no one went home empty handed. The array of prizes and the day were generously sponsored by club members Sue Curran, Graeme Bennet and Ling Qu. Sue and Graeme assisted with awards. Ling will have to enjoy the stories and photos from the day online! The photo album is on Facebook @StHeliersBowls
First year bowler John McAuley made a brief speech on behalf of the newbie bowlers of the St Heliers Bowling Club: “This is my first year bowling. This is my first tournament. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and we can’t thank you enough.”
And were there some volunteers to make apple slice and pumpkin soup for coaching this Saturday?!
Some fun prize name and explain:
- Dropping full house – awarded raw eggs, as “You need to get cracking to do better” and you have egg on your face for doing that
- Tin Bum shot got a Wonder Cloth- as we are still wondering how he did that (awarded to John Ross)
- Noisiest player, in the best possible way
