2018 ABCA won by North West

The playing of the 2018 ABCA cup was played out at Howick Bowling Club on 25th August 2018. The weather whilst nice and sunny was cold in the wind. Conditions were tricky with both greens shaded at one end and wind affected at the other. Most players got to grips with the conditions quite quickly and good bowls were played by all the players in the thirty five teams of mixed fours.

The games were played to 1hr 20mins with four rounds making up the tournament format. All games were played in good spirits and camaraderie. Competition was very fierce from the five Auckland coaching zones with old and new friendships forged.

Games were in the main evenly balanced even though the format was set up as bonus fours, with the shot or shots scored by the leads and twos counting with a maximum of 2 bonus points. At the end of the day there were five teams with four wins, one with three wins and a draw, eight teams with three wins, one team with two wins and a draw, six teams with two wins, one team with one win and a draw, seven teams winning one game, one team with only a draw and five teams failed to register a win or draw.

History was made with the runners up. Their skip Davey is only 11 years old and has become the youngest skip to be ranked the highest place getter at his age in the history of the ABCA tournament. Well done Davey.

The Coaches Association extends their thanks to the Howick Bowling Club for making their facilities available for the days play. Thanks also go to the Howick members for their work behind the scenes providing lunches and beverages.  Thanks to Gerard and the umpires for their time and expertise in running the event. The biggest thanks go to the zone host clubs and all the coaches involved with the winter coaching programme.
