Auckland Club Championship Singles & 1-5 Year Fours

Another superb weekend of Bowls in Auckland. With three great Finals today, we are very lucky to have such a depth of talent in our numbers. The best of the best in the Club Championship Singles treated the spectators at Balmoral Bowling Club to some great bowls. With both the Men’s and Women’s Finals being very close.

In the Men’s Final it was the vastly experienced Petar Sain who took an early lead, with some thinking a repeat of last year’s Auckland Singles Final between the two may be on the cards – Sain 10-2 up by the seventh end. But Takarua was un-fazed and finding his green came back fighting and by the twelfth was just one point behind 9-10. The turning point in the match coming in the 16th with Takarua picking up a four and taking the lead 15-13, from here there were beautiful shots by both players with Takarua holding the lead and Sain never far behind. A two and a measure for the third from Takarua in the 22nd saw the young star take the Auckland Club Championship Singles title for 2019.

In the Women’s Club Championship Singles two seasoned, talented bowlers took to the green to contest the title. Esther Eu – Blockhouse Bay Bowls and Lauren Mills – Te Atatu Peninsula. Eu took the early points and lead 5-1 in the fifth end, Mills closing the gap to one in the 11th. Eu pushed ahead again and by the 22nd looked to have the game in-hand on 20-11. But a great come-back by Mills saw her put an impressive 9 pts on the board in the next four ends tying the game up 20-20. The last end saw Eu take two points and the win 22-20.

The competition in the Women’s 1-5 Year Fours was played in its entirety on Saturday with five teams contesting the title. A round robin of five games was played with the Women from Royal Oak Linda Halton, Phili Akaruru, Tupia Akaruru and Susan Ranginui clear winners on 10pts and the Composite team of Chelsea Farley, Tessa Farley, Tina Jerrom and Linda Fenton Runners-up on 7pts. Special mention to Linda Halton on her second Centre title in two weeks – all in her first year of Bowling – an amazing achievement.

The Auckland Men’s 1-5 Year Fours was a hard-fought weekend with 11 teams vying for the title. The Semi’s saw Kevin Beasley, Dean Edge, Storm Tanaki and Anthony Bilocerkonilz – Composite going down 13-15 to Howick’s Danny Belsham, Roland Lee, Bruce Fenton and Lex Calder – Howick in the first and Roger Johnston, Graeme Lill, Steve Hodder and Nick Donovan of St Heliers defeated 8-19 by Pene Panapa, Pale Luka, Rangi Tangoroa and Vili Fifita – Composite in the second. The Final between the two victors was always going to be close and they didn’t disappoint, a great match with the Howick team taking the title 14-12 in the 15th end.

Many thanks to our host clubs this weekend: Howick, Blockhouse Bay and headquarter Balmoral. Thanks to our umpires Helen Stallard, Weng Lim, Chris Steel and Chief Umpire Amy Cheung to all our Markers and volunteers. Thanks to our commentators for the live-stream Gary Lawrence and Claire Tawhero – great job!
